The WERFEN Group, Hospital Group, leading distributor in Spain, planned the strategic objective for the expansion of its activity in Portugal by acquiring Cormédica in 1996, then further strengthening its position two years later with the acquisition of Medicinália; both entities being well recognized for their activity in the sector.

Medicinália initiated its activities in 1968 as a result of evolution within the Hospital Division of Laboratorio Sanitas (founded in 1911), having as its main objective the production and supply of Hospital and Laboratory Equipment and Products.
Throughout its existence, Medicinália represented brands of high quality hospital products and equipment while participating actively in the development of new hospitals in Portugal, and became reknown in the Portuguese market.
Cormédica, founded in 1977, distinguished itself as the first company to introduce the heart valve in Portugal. Though initially developed for the distribution of cardiology products in which area it lead the field, Cormédica later expanded into Orthopedics and Anesthesia, amongst other areas.
Today, Medicinália - Cormédica is a strong, consolidated company, the dynamic activity of which places it in stable competitiveness within the market, ensuring the distributorship of the most important brand names and above all, highest quality service to its clients.
The company's entrepreneurial strength reaches beyond national boundaries, with its presence extending to the other PALOP nations (those in which Portuguese is likewise the official language), where its activities are manifested in different arenas of action, such as in the supply of integrated solutions, equipment installation, technical assistance and training within public and private hospitals.
